Geotab announced its new electric vehicle (EV) range analysis, examining the impact of speed and temperature, is now available on the Fleet Electrification Knowledge Center.

The interactive analysis, showcased for the first time at Geotab Connect 2023, uses de-identified, aggregated data from 3 million EV trips and 550,000 hours of driving time to better understand the relative range impact of temperature and speed.

“Backed by real-world EV data, the analysis is intended to be used as a resource to help educate users on factors that impact EV range and build awareness of strategies to optimize EV deployment,” said Charlotte Argue, Senior Manager of Fleet Electrification at Geotab.

The police chief of Somerset in Wisconsin explained in detail why his police department decided to go electric with a Tesla Model Y patrol car and how he expects the single electric vehicle will save the town $80,000.

The Model Y cost the department $60,000, though they had some subsidies and help to acquire it, but more importantly, Joel Trepczyk, Somerset PD Chief, believes Somerset PD will save over $80,000 over 10 years thanks to these benefits to the cost of operation: no oil changes, regenerative braking, battery designed for 500,000 miles, and more.

As cars become ever-more sophisticated, consumers will be able to pay using onboard interfaces, saving the time and hassle of having to hold their credit card out of the window or pulling over and getting out their phone. This new frontier is known as ‘in-vehicle payments’.

If the car is running low on fuel, it can order the right amount of fuel at the nearest petrol station and then the driver simply has to confirm the action on the car screen.

Payment cards’ data protection and fraud prevention technologies are far more advanced than car anti-theft systems, so current encryption protocols along with other methods used by payment systems provide a sufficient level of protection for in-vehicle payment data.

The US Department of Defense has been slowly introducing electric vehicles into its non-tactical fleet, and it is getting ready to jump into tactical vehicles, too.

Canoo delivered a Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV) to the U.S. Army in November. NASA also raised the Canoo profile last spring, when it selected the company to provide launchpad transportation for astronauts in its Artemis moon mission.

Joining its other marquee research study reports, J.D. Power (JDP) has introduced the J.D. Power EV Index, which will reveal U.S. vehicle electrification efforts on a monthly basis.

Making the index more robust and valuable is a comparison each month to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in those same categories.

“Vehicle electrification has industry leaders grappling with billion-dollar decisions, and hyper-detailed data and analytics will help guide their decision making,” said Elizabeth Krear, vice president of electric vehicle practice at J.D. Power.
