A brand of engine oil made from recycled and re-refined engine oil is on the market now and is called EcoPower. The company believes enough in its product that it sponsored invitation-only Fortune Brainstorm Green, which is taking place from April 29 to May 1 in Laguna Niguel, Calif. The company, owned by Safety-Kleen, said it provides dual benefits – protecting engines and the environment.
Here’s a recycled few things to know about the green automotive product:
EcoPower says that its product meets or exceeds all industry standards for quality as determined by the American Petroleum Institute, and is approved by all major engine manufacturers.
More than 1.4 billion gallons of oil are generated annually in the US, and most of it is burned for one-time energy use. Safety-Kleen collects more than 200 million gallons of used oil a year and then re-refines it to create high-quality lubricants, including EcoPower.
There’s more interest lately among consumers and fleets about the entire lifecycle of the vehicles – with much attention paid emissions, durability, efficiency, and longtime sustainability impact. Recycled engine oil is finding more of market lately as OEMs and dealers invest more into the entire process, including energy efficient operations.
That’s one of the appealing parts of the EcoPower product. The process to create EcoPower requires up to 85% less energy than engine oil made from virgin crude. And, for every 100 million gallons of greener re-refined engine oil used, more than 650 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated – equal to the carbon sequestered by growing more than 19 million trees for 10 years in an urban environment, the company said.
