Used commercial vehicle registrations during the first half of 2013 calendar year were up more than nine percent over the same period in 2012, according to Polk. Nearly 357,100 used commercial registrations were recorded. Polk also found used transactions during the second quarter of 2013 calendar year were the highest since the second quarter of 2011 calendar year, according to Gary Meteer, Director, Aftermarket and Commercial Vehicle Solutions at Polk. The sales trend reflects continued demand for clean used equipment – much more so than new commercial vehicles, which saw an increase of only one half percent during first half of this year, according to the study. The strength of used commercial vehicle transactions during the first half of 2013 reflects a competitive market for clean used equipment as it becomes available.
The data indicates that the majority of these commercial transactions show the replacement of older equipment versus adding to total vehicle population. Used commercial vehicles accounted for 56.7% of commercial vehicle transactions in the first half of this year; that compares with a period of time from 2004 to 2008, when used transactions accounted for 41% to 48% of transactions.
