City of Tampa Fleet Team Completes 13,000 Work Orders, 38,000 Repairs this Year, Keeping City’s Essential Vehicles on the Road
The City of Tampa’s Automotive Service Professionals go above and beyond, ensuring critical vehicles (including Fire and Police) stay on the road and continue to provide essential services to Tampa families and visitors. In honor of National Automotive Service Professionals Day, Mayor Jane Castor visited the City’s Central Fleet facility to say thank you to our fleet maintenance team and presented a proclamation honoring them.
The City of Tampa’s Fleet Maintenance Team has 68 employees, working both day and night shifts. They service 3,500 vehicles and pieces of equipment for the City of Tampa, including light-duty, medium/heavy duty vehicles including garbage trucks, fire apparatus, police vehicles, and fire trucks.
“This week is all about thanking our fleet team for all they do to provide other City departments with the resources that they need to serve Tampa,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “All of you are working hard, day in and day out to keep our city vehicles on the road and in great condition. We couldn’t do it without all of you. Every time a firefighter or police officer starts the engine of their unit to respond to a call, they depend on you. The Fleet team can take pride in knowing they, indirectly, have saved countless lives because our public safety units are able to respond to calls.”
In the past year, the City of Tampa’s Fleet Maintenance Team:
-Conducted nearly 500 in-house speedometer calibrations, coordinate the outfitting for TPD vehicles (radios, lights, decals, and cages)
-Completed approximately 13,000 work orders, with more than 38,000 repairs completed
Upon completion of the new City Center at Hanna Avenue Municipal Office Complex, located in East Tampa, the city will relocate 1,500 light-duty vehicles to that facility. As part of that move, the City’s Fleet Maintenance Team will partner with the City of Tampa’s Workforce Team to provide new training opportunities in East Tampa and beyond.

As part of Mayor Jane Castor’s Transforming Tampa’s Tomorrow initiative, the City of Tampa is prioritizing the use of alternative fuel, where fleet maintenance has played a critical role in that transition. To date, the City of Tampa has added 24 fully electric vehicles (EV), 53 hybrid vehicles, and 99 compressed natural gas (CNG) solid waste trucks to the City’s fleet, totaling 176 alternative-fueled vehicles.
