Get Out of Your Own Way!

By Walter Bond, Hall of Fame Business Speaker & Former Big Ten & NBA Basketball Player

It’s another start to the day. Another start to a new week or new month.  But what happened? What happened to the plan of attack you created? What happened to the strategies you determined would get you from here to there? Aren’t you tired of doing the same thing over and over again only to realize it’s not delivering “‘Your Best.” That your approach is NOT getting you to the next level?

So, you rationalize by saying, I’m tired. I’m frustrated. I’m exhausted. I can’t do it. It doesn’t necessarily require all effort that I thought it does. I forgot. I just didn’t feel like it. I found a shortcut. Those are just a few of the ways we excuse ourselves for not doing what we know we really need to do. But why do we keep doing things that don’t lead us to the harvest we want? Why do we think we can do things our old way and get something new? It never happens and it never will. It’s time for us all to Get Out of our Own Way. What do I mean by that?

I have seen time and time again sales people, business people, professionals like you and me, come up with their strategic game plan that’s going to reap them more benefits, only to revert back to their old ways. Often, this reversion takes almost no time at all — I mean reverting after only one day or one week or just one month.

If we don’t stop this madness, the madness will never stop. It’s high time to get focused and committed to your success. You have to fight to execute the game plan. You have to fight to commit to the schedule. Just like Nike says: Just Do It. Get it scheduled. Get it done. Stop making excuses and just do it.

Here are my best strategies to get out of your own way:

  1. Know each day is a day in itself. It doesn’t matter what happened yesterday or what’s going to happen tomorrow. Do the things today that your strategy calls for to advance yourself. This works for students, this works for running a marathon. This works for business. This idea simply works.
  2. Don’t over-schedule. Create a realistic “To Do” list. Stop being so idealistic that you are unrealistic. I can’t stress enough the importance of planning out basic steps. It might sound simplistic but, trust me, it’s realistic. Gain momentum through a simplified schedule.
  3. Rank your priorities annually, monthly and daily. We have to prioritize our lives. Schedule the most important things that mean the most to you.
  4. Stop making excuses. There simply are none that are acceptable. You know what you said you were going to do. Within the 24 hours called a day, it’s your duty to make it happen. Those around you are waiting for you and are relying on you.

So, let’s go team. Let’s get up. Let’s get focused. Let’s get to work. Let’s make the commitment to ourselves. Commitment by definition means the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, a goal. Today that cause is you. What do you need to do right now to Get out of Your Own Way? Trust me: create the plan and you can do it!!
