Mobility Monitor Uncovers Facts about Telematics

“As telematics become increasingly standard, companies could be found liable for not integrating it into their fleets because the technology does exist, it is available and is also widely used,”

A global survey recently conducted by LeasePlan revealed that the use of telematics leads to increased driver safety, fewer accident claims and a considerable reduction in fuel consumption. The survey, which involved 3,377 drivers in 20 countries worldwide, concluded that driver behavior can be positively impacted by telematics.

Telematics enables near-real-time data to be captured from vehicles and converted into useful information such as mileage, fuel efficiency, driver behavior, accident analysis and vehicle localization (including recovery after theft).

Globally, more and more organizations are using telematics with the aim of improving the safety, eco-friendliness, productivity and profitability of their leasing fleet. Of the drivers interviewed, 35 percent stated that they would change their driving behavior if a telematics device were installed.

David Doyle, regional vice president of client relations at LeasePlan USA agrees. He shared with us his personal experience with telematics. “I, like many fleet drivers, initially questioned the technology. Now, it’s second nature for me to drive in a safer, slower manner because of the device’s audible coaching guidelines. Receiving a good score on my weekly reports feels like an accomplishment.”

According to Doyle, telematics is quickly gaining attention and importance in the fleet industry, and fleet managers –globally and locally– should be aware of this trend. “As telematics become increasingly standard, companies could be found liable for not integrating it into their fleets because the technology does exist, it is available and is also widely used,” he said.

Doyle believes telematics is the beginning of a larger movement that will ultimately make roads safer for all drivers. “The driving habits created by the use of telematics can certainly carry with you when you drive other vehicles. Because telematics is a constant reinforcement, I am a safer driver, no matter what vehicle I use.”
