The CEI Group, Inc. (CEI) has released a new online fleet training module that educates drivers about ways to avoid the dangers of drowsy driving.
“With all the attention focused on distracted and drunk driving, the dangers of driving when you’re too tired can be overlooked,” said Brian Kinniry, senior director of strategic account services. “We hope this module will raise awareness and help prevent accidents.”
The video notes that driving after being awake for 17 hours is like driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.05, enough to raise a driver’s chances of having an accident.
Some key points covered in the four-minute module are:
• 40% of U.S. drivers admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel while driving.
• Driver fatigue causes some 100,000 traffic collisions and 1,500 deaths per year.
• Crashes in which fatigue is a factor are three times more likely to result in serious injury.
• Driving fatigued can have the same effect as driving drunk.
• The warning signs of driver fatigue.
• What to do if you experience fatigue while driving.
The module is available to drivers whose fleets subscribe to CEI’s DriverCare™ Risk Manager fleet safety application. To receive credit for the lesson, drivers must complete a 5-question test after viewing it.
