Strength for the Journey

Our nation has experienced many peaceful demonstrations this year, but as Driving Dynamics’ CEO and president Art Liggio points out in Journey Management: Preparing Drivers to Safely Travel During Times of Civil Unrest, about five percent of them have turned violent. Liggio’s guide is timely; we can expect more demonstrations in this fraught election year.

We note in the Orlando Sentinel that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a law that includes a rule that would shield drivers from liability “for injury and death caused if fleeing for safety from a mob.” So, theoretically, drivers could mow down protestors and face no legal consequences. We’ll have to keep an eye on Florida.

A bright spot we can point to in this difficult year is the success of NAFA’s 2020 Virtual I&E. This week, FMW executive editor Mark Boada writes about the conclusions of the leadership panel in The State of Fleet in the Time of COVID-19.

Finally, the FMW team congratulates Donlen president Tom Callahan on his well-deserved election into the AFLA Fleet Hall of Fame, and Bryan Flansburg, CAFM, for being honored by NAFA with its Distinguished Service Award!

Safety & Risk

By Art Liggio, CEO and President, Driving Dynamics

September 2020

The very first amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects individual rights of free speech along with other important civil liberties.

Over the decades, Americans have cherished and embraced this right and, in many cases, this freedom has contributed to producing a better society. Free speech has often been exercised as citizens gather to protest unfair practices and decisions made by government mandates on both the federal and state levels, and to address other societal wrongs.

During 2020 we have experienced both the good and the bad, as demonstrations have surged to new levels and continue today. About 95 percent have remained peaceful but five percent of these events have resulted in civil unrest, violence, and police enforcement.

Driver Accountability

For fleet managers, having a handle on driver data is not an end in itself. Digital Document Storage is the key to making sure that drivers are in compliance with regulations and up to date with their licenses and certifications.

By Adam Danielson, Director of Sales

September 2020

For fleet managers, accountability should be a top-of-mind concern. MVR status, regulatory compliance, up-to-date licenses and certifications — all of these are underpinned by accountability — both the drivers’ and the fleets’.

Being accountable means being responsible and trusted. And with the growing availability of data monitoring and integration technology — accountability is critical to compliance and performance.

Uber Robocar Safety Driver Charged With Negligent Homicide

Forbes

In March of 2018, a self-driving Uber struck and killed a homeless woman walking her bicycle across an isolated road in Tempe, AZ. The collision rocked the self-driving world, but remains its only fatality.

One key factor remained, would there be criminal liability for the safety driver, the woman responsible for supervising the self-driving system and taking control if it makes a mistake?

She was charged because her job was to operate a prototype vehicle known to need interventions, yet, as police allege, she was instead watching the streaming show “The Voice” on her phone, rarely looking at the road.

A Car Insurance Claim Estimate Before the Tow Truck is Called

DNYUZ

On a typical day, about 80,000 American drivers have accidents serious enough to warrant calling their insurers.

After the initial shock comes a predictable sequence of worries: Was anyone hurt? Am I at fault? The driver’s first call is often to the insurance company, which leads to the next questions: How long will it take to get an estimate, get my car into the shop and then get it back on the road?

The time it takes to settle auto insurance claims is being shortened, and the accuracy of initial estimates is improving, because U.S. insurers now use artificial intelligence to generate repair estimates.

2021 VW ID.4 Buyers Will Get 3 Years of Free Fast Charging

The Drive

It’s impossible to launch a mainstream-aimed electric vehicle like the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 without attracting comparison to EV segment leader Tesla.

Unafraid of being measured alongside the Tesla yardstick, however, VW will mirror Tesla’s early-adopter incentive scheme, and offer three years of free fast charging to everyone who buys its electric crossover.

Drivers of the ID.4 will be able to cash in on this perk at Electrify America stations; a growing network of fast-charge kiosks backed by multiple automakers. Nationwide, Electrify America has 470 operational stations with over 2,000 chargers, many of them along a recently completed route between Los Angeles and Washington D.C.

Plug-in Hybrids are a ‘Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’

BBC

Carbon dioxide emissions from plug-in hybrid cars are as much as two-and-a-half times higher than official tests suggest, according to new research.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are sold as a low-carbon alternative to traditional vehicles and conventional hybrids – which cannot be recharged from an external source – and are proving increasingly popular.

But analysis from pressure groups Transport and Environment and Greenpeace suggest they emit an average of 120g of CO2 per km. That compares with the 44g per km in official “lab” tests

Fleet Technology

Quotevine,

How Technology is Transforming Fleet Management, the new white paper from Quotevine, acknowledges that the sector is on the brink of an unprecedented growth opportunity.

They consider the trends that are driving growth in the industry, such as the move towards Mobility as a Service (MaaS), enhanced data integration and the rise of fleet software, are also changing the way fleets are built, managed and leveraged within a business.

“In a world of changing mobility, the corporate fleet has shown remarkable resilience… By 2021, forecasts predict that only 37% of new car registrations will come from the private market, while the corporate channel drives the other 63%2. Accordingly, the fleet management business has developed into a multi-billion-euro industry in Europe,” it says, adding that “capitalizing on this moment will require a new approach from fleet providers…”.

Pedestrian Safety

USA TODAY

The nation is grappling with a pedestrian safety crisis that has worsened in recent years: The number of pedestrians killed in the U.S. hit a 28-year high of 6,283 in 2018, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That figure was up 46% from 2010.

While the crisis stems from many factors, a new book brings it into sharper focus. Former Streetsblog USA writer Angie Schmitt’s “Right of Way: Race, Class, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America” is an exposé drawing upon comprehensive reporting to articulate the root causes of a public health crisis.

“If we analyze these patterns, they tell us very clearly that pedestrian deaths are not just random acts of God or bad luck, nor are they the result of individual decision-making or laziness (although both bad luck and bad decisions often play a role),” Schmitt writes. ”
